Meanderings: The Simple Wisdom of New England

This summer, I will depart on a photographic adventure throughout New England, meandering through its back roads to capture its old world spirit and simplistic nature through the lens of my camera. A portrait of New England, the cradle of our country is a land of picture-postcard villages, guiding lighthouses, rustic covered bridges, foggy coastlines, and Walden Pond that still flows with currents of wisdom today. Believe it or not, I have finished my Sacred Pause 2009 calendar. When I decided to do this project, I did not want to create just a “regular calendar,” but one that is a little more unique and inspiring.

I have titled it “Sacred Pause: The Wisdom of Stillness.” It will be a blending of Sacred Pause images, complementary inspirational passages, and a “Monthly Pause” exercise each month that will rally the reader to dig deeper for a more enriching life. I have found that blending images and encouraging words can help “shift the soul”; there is such power with words and pictures when seen together. It creates a double-punch, a spark of energy, like when 2 stones are rubbed together. I have completed selection of the images, and I am now working on picking the best passages and exercises to pair with them. Some of the life lessons I will include are: Be in the Moment; Ask your Angels; Peace Maker; Listen to your Heart; Honoring Those Wise Souls; and Sacred Spaces at Home.

My hope is for this calendar to truly be a piece of art and inspiration that the reader will enjoy each day of the year and beyond. Why do I travel to sacred places?

My journey to sacred places is not a new concept. Since the beginning of time, people have sojourned near and far to sacred places in pursuit of a spiritual communion with oneself, ancient people and the universe around us. My sacred journey to Hawaii will include visits to many sacred sites which will include Hawaiian heiaus-a place of ancient worship, offering and sacrifice. A stay at a Tibetan Buddhist Temple where the Dalai Lama has taught. A visit to Molokai's Kalaupapa Peninsula which has a great sense of mystery and reverence. This location was set aside in the 1860's as a leper colony and where the Belgian priest Father Damien tended and gave comfort to the exiled patients before he was afflicted with the disease.

Sacred places represent the essential spirit of humankind.

His journey will include the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii and Molokai. Some of the sacred sites that he will visit include : Pu’uhonua(Place of Refuge), ancient sacred haven; Kaena Point, the legendary”leaping place of souls”; Iao Valley, meaning “supreme light” and a place of pilgrimage for Maui warriors; Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano and the site where the god Maui held the sun hostage; and Waipio Valley, the burial site for many kings and home of Hawaii’s highest waterfall and the solitude of Kalaupapa’s Peninsula, home to Father Damien’s church and still active leper colony.

I believe that life is a sacred adventure and everyday we see signs that point to the presence of daily sacred encounters all around us. What do we do with these “sacred sightings”? Embrace them, ignore them, or just rush past them?

These sacred pauses are not usually big events, but are small and simple, meant to bring the important things in our lives back into focus. They are brief moments between the ordinary that can make all the difference in a day.

A Cherokee meditation that I use in my workshops says, “Most of the time we live ‘in between’, but that middle ground can be as rewarding as the highest plane.”

I would like for you to share ways you have a “sacred pause” in your busy day.

What is Sacred Pause?

I would like to introduce myself and let you know who I am and what I do with passion.

I am a fine art photographer and workshop facilitator, and I always am in search for the sacredness in the ordinary. In my many journeys to sacred places near and far, I usually take the road less traveled -- camera in hand, looking for the quiet place, the often-overlooked image, the peace that holds our hectic life at bay. In most of my travels, the lesson learned rests in the journey, not in the final sacred destination. I have captured these spiritually-inspired images and lessons in photographs and stories, freezing in time the present moment, illustrating the sacredness in the ordinary often missed in our busy lives. Theses images and stories exemplify the reverence and uplifting spirit sacred places around the world reveal.

Sacred Pause began during a time in my life that I needed to be still, reflect, and take a pause. My passion for photography blossomed during this time; I was drawn to spiritual landscapes that existed all around me, and I paused to honor life’s quiet rhythms: lessons in fierce landscapes, desert silence, pacific fog, stillness of redwoods, mountaintop prayer, solitude at an ancient sea, even the glow of my backyard garden angel… these spiritual landscapes provided me solace.

Admirers of Sacred Pause photography typically feel a strong emotional connection, whether it’s because I’ve captured a moment in time that perfectly symbolizes a memorable travel destination thousands of miles away, or simply through spiritual objects and moments closer to home. Imagine a sunrise in Venice where the gondolas seem to glow, a lei-covered holy statue in Hawaii, a row of angels on high in a New Orleans cemetery, the pristine calm of a fog-laced morning in Muir Woods, a picturesque sunrise over the Dead Sea, or a lone soldier praying at Jerusalem’s Western Wall.

I also conduct a workshop I call “Sacred Pause: Revealing Your Journey,” that completes the Sacred Pause experience by allowing participants the opportunity to experience “journeys of the soul” and discover their own, deeply personal way of slowing down to better connect with the world around them.

My hope is that we will pause each day, to experience the beauty around us, to realize the hidden power of sacred moments, to savor rituals, and to give thanks for our blessings.
